TRANSFORMATION n. f. « action de transformer ou de se transformer » est emprunté (1375) au latin transformatio, -onis, dérivé tardivement (Saint Augustin) de transformare. [...] Sous l'influence de l'anglais transformation (chez Zellig, Harris), le mot a pris en linguistique un sens technique, en relation avec les théories de Harris puis de Chomsky, pour ce dernier, « opération permettant de passer d'une structure profonde à la structure superficielle d'un énoncé ».
TRANSFORMATIONNEL, ELLE adj. est emprunté (v. 1960) à l'anglais transformational, employé en linguistique par Chomsky dans transformational grammar, en relation avec generative (--> génératif).

LING. [Corresp. à transformation A 3 i] Qui concerne la transformation. ♦ Grammaire transformationnelle. Grammaire comportant des règles qui établissent des équivalences entre divers types de phrases, dont elle rend compte par des opérations implicites`` (Ling. 1972). [...] ♦ Composante transformationnelle. Partie de la syntaxe d'une grammaire générative contenant les règles qui permettent de générer à partir des suites issues de la base syntagmatique d'autres suites qui peuvent recevoir une interprétation phonétique (Ling. 1972). ♦ Dérivation transformationnelle. Étant donné un indicateur syntagmatique généralisé, on construit une dérivation transformationnelle en appliquant une séquence linéaire de transformations singulières de bas en haut, c'est-à-dire en appliquant d'abord cette séquence à la structure dominée par P (= phrase) la plus profondément enchâssée dans l'indicateur syntagmatique généralisé, en réappliquant ensuite cette séquence à la structure immédiatement supérieure dominée par P dans l'indicateur, et ainsi de suite jusqu'à ce que la séquence de transformations soit appliquée à la structure supérieure la plus élevée dominée par le symbole initial P engendré par les règles de la base (Mounin 1974). ♦ Indicateur syntagmatique transformationnel. Description de la structure transformationnelle d'une phrase (...) à savoir description de toute la séquence des opérations transformationnelles qui ont été appliquées dans le processus de dérivation d'une phrase et qui convertissent un ou plusieurs indicateurs syntagmatiques à base simple en un indicateur syntagmatique dérivé final (d'apr. Mounin 1974).
